It is the job of an artist to convey emotions, thoughts and ideas through their artwork, and what better way to convey such a complicated subject than to get personal and draw what you know. I have created a series of pieces that show how my brain works. Whether it's sensory issues, dysphoria, anxiety, or all the joys that come with ADHD, I am going to explore what I experience on a daily basis. Throughout my series people will be able to explore my different habits, compulsions, fixations, and emotions, and will hopefully be able to relate to some of them.
For my sustained investigation I chose to research how artists put themselves into their artwork; How artists portray their emotions, habits, compulsions, or fixations; How honest can an artist be when it comes down to sharing who they really are.
The biggest inspiration for my sustained investigation was experiencing the simple joy of relating to others. I’m filled with happiness when I learn that I am not alone in experiencing certain problems or emotions. Like when you look online and you find a whole community of people experiencing the same thing as you, or when you see representation of parts of yourself in a book or TV show. Another big inspiration for my pieces is my past artwork. I look back on different techniques and styles that I have used in the past and show how I can incorporate that in a new and improved way, such as in my 4th piece. For my 4th piece, as well as the others pieces, I used a mixture of markers, colored pencils, paint, and crayons to create a mixed media piece of art. I was able to color my 4th piece using markers and using paint and crayons I was able to create a lightning effect. I also look back on what inspired me. What artist, style, or emotions compelled me to draw what I did.
Working on this concentration taught me a lot about myself, and how to express emotions in my artwork. This year has let me improve my technique and skill while also letting me show who I am to others. I have been able to share my thought process and struggles to people I would never be able to talk to about, which just goes to show how amazing art can be.
